Recently, a beginner quilter came to me with a frustrating problem. Her machine had been sewing beautifully, and then—almost overnight—the stitches became loose and inconsistent. She hadn't changed her tension settings, so she was understandably confused.

Her first thought? The bobbin. Then the tension. Maybe she had threaded the machine incorrectly.

Getting a perfect ¼-inch seam is one of the most important—and sometimes one of the most challenging—parts of quilting. The more you practice, the more comfortable and accurate you will become.

For years I often skipped pre-washing fabric before making quilt blocks. Many quilters do, and there is nothing wrong with that approach. But over time I’m finding more situations where pre-washing is helpful before cutting, especially when using fabrics from different sources.
